A Must-Read for First-Time Mummas!

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey - but let’s be honest, it’s also a wild ride filled with surprises, emotional ups and downs and moments where you wonder what on earth is happening to your body.

If you’re a first-time mum feeling overwhelmed by all the changes, you’re not alone. From strange cravings to sleepless nights, here’s a down-to-earth guide to navigating the beautiful (and chaotic) mayhem of pregnancy.

1. The Emotional Rollercoaster is Real

One minute you’re overjoyed and crying at a commercial, and the next you’re frustrated because someone ate the last Tim Tam. Welcome to pregnancy hormones!

How to cope:

  • Give yourself grace—mood swings are normal, and it’s okay to feel everything.
  • Communicate openly with your partner, even when it’s hard to explain what’s wrong.
  • Make time for self-care, whether it’s a quiet walk, a nap, or your favourite comfort meal.

Your emotions are valid. You’re growing life - it’s no small task.

2. The Weird (& Sometimes Gross) Symptoms

Pregnancy brings a whole range of unexpected changes. From morning sickness that lasts all day to heartburn that feels endless, your body is working around the clock.

What helps:

  • Morning sickness: Keep dry crackers by your bed, sip ginger tea and eat small meals often.
  • Heartburn: Skip spicy or greasy foods and try sleeping propped up with extra pillows.
  • Exhaustion: Rest whenever you can - your body is doing more than it ever has before.

And if you ever feel like your symptoms are too much, don’t hesitate to reach out to your care provider.

3. The Never-Ending Advice (And Unwanted Opinions)

From the moment you share your pregnancy news, everyone seems to have an opinion - family, friends, even strangers at the shops. It can be overwhelming.

How to handle it:

  • Set gentle boundaries. Listen if it’s helpful, but don’t feel obligated to follow every suggestion.
  • Politely change the subject when people push too hard.
  • Remember: this is your pregnancy, your birth and your baby. Trust your instincts.

4. Preparing for Birth Without THE OVERWHELM

It’s completely normal to feel nervous about labour. The unknown can be intimidating - but understanding your options can help you feel calm and confident.

What helps:

  • Take a childbirth class (in-person or online).
  • Research different birth options - hospital, birthing centre, or home birth.
  • Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or prenatal yoga.

Your body knows what to do, even when your mind starts to doubt it. You are stronger than you think.

5. The Nesting Instinct & Last-Minute Panic

At some point in your third trimester, you might feel an intense urge to clean, organise and prepare everything for baby’s arrival. One minute you’re peacefully folding onesies and the next you’re scrubbing the fridge at midnight.

Tips to stay sane:

  • Prioritise what truly matters - your baby doesn’t need a perfect nursery on day one.
  • Pack your hospital bag early to avoid the last-minute rush.
  • Let others help. You don’t have to do everything yourself.

6. Remember: There’s No "Right" Way to Do Pregnancy

Every pregnancy is unique. Some women feel amazing, others feel nauseous, tired and emotional. Both experiences are completely normal.

Be kind to yourself. Trust your body.

Let go of expectations and embrace the chaos - it’s all part of the journey.

You’ve Got This, Mama!

Pregnancy is an emotional whirlwind of change and growth, but at the end of it all, you’ll be holding the most precious little person in your arms. And that makes every moment worth it.

If you’re expecting and want to document this chapter, consider a maternity photoshoot. It’s a beautiful way to remember how strong and radiant you were during this incredible season of life.

I photograph maternity sessions across the Central Coast, Newcastle, and Hunter Valley - capturing the real, raw beauty of motherhood.
