Breastfeeding Awareness Week (1–7 August) is a chance to pause, support and celebrate every mum’s feeding journey - whether you’ve just begun, struggled through, or decided to go another route entirely. As a Central Coast birth and motherhood photographer (and a mum myself), I know firsthand that breastfeeding is anything but one-size-fits-all. It’s beautiful, it’s messy and sometimes, it’s really hard.
In honour of BF Awareness Week, I’m sharing some practical encouragement and real-talk for local mums across the Central Coast, Newcastle and Hunter Valley - because every journey is different and every mum deserves support.
I. Every Breastfeeding Journey is Different
Some mums find breastfeeding comes naturally, while others experience challenges like latch issues, low milk supply, or discomfort. No matter your journey, remember that you are doing an incredible job - whether you breastfeed for days, months, or even years.
II. The Early Days Can Be Challenging (But It Gets Easier!)
Cluster feeding, sore nipples and engorgement can make the first few weeks overwhelming. But with time, patience and the right support, breastfeeding often becomes easier. Lactation consultants, midwives and support groups (many offer support through public hospitals or private clinics right here on the Central Coast) can provide guidance to help you through the tough moments.
III. Breastfeeding Benefits Both Mum and Baby
Breast milk is packed with essential nutrients, antibodies and digestive enzymes that support your baby’s immune system. Breastfeeding also benefits mums by promoting postpartum recovery, reducing the risk of certain health conditions and strengthening the bond between mother and baby.
IV. Support is Key to a Positive Breastfeeding Experience
Having a strong support system can make all the difference. Whether it’s a partner who helps ensure your hydrated and fed, a friend who reassures you, or a lactation consultant who provides expert advice, you don’t have to do this alone.
📍 Local tip: Many Central Coast families find great support at Gosford Hospital’s breastfeeding clinic and The Milk Meg’s local resources for Hunter mums.
V. Fed is Best - Support All Feeding Choices
While breastfeeding offers many benefits, it’s not always possible for every mum. If you need to supplement or switch to formula, you are still an incredible mum. The most important thing is ensuring your baby is happy, healthy and well-fed - no guilt allowed!
VI. Normalizing Breastfeeding in Public
Breastfeeding in public is completely natural, yet many mums still feel self-conscious about it. The more we support and normalize breastfeeding in everyday life, the easier it becomes for future mums to feed their babies with confidence.
Whether you’re exclusively breastfeeding, combo feeding, or have moved on from your breastfeeding journey, every experience is worth celebrating. Let’s continue to support, educate and uplift mums everywhere.
