Welcoming a baby into the world is one of the most magical experiences & capturing those first precious moments is something you’ll treasure forever.

A Fresh 48hr/Newborn photoshoot allows you to preserve the details of those early days - tiny fingers, toes, ears, little bums, sleepy yawns & the purest love between parents & baby. If you’re preparing for one of these sessions, here are some tips to make the experience smooth, enjoyable & memorable!!

I. Timing Is Everything

For Fresh 48 sessions, the ideal time is within the first 24–48hrs after birth. This captures your baby’s first moments in the hospital, showcasing their freshness & raw beauty. For traditional newborn sessions, aim for when your baby is 5–14 days old. At this age, they’re still very sleepy & easier to pose in those iconic curled-up positions.

II. Keep It Simple

Your baby is the star of the show! Focus on their natural beauty & connection with your family rather than elaborate props or setups. Fresh 48hr sessions often use the hospital room or your home as a backdrop, creating an authentic & emotional feel. If you want to include props, think of soft blankets, a favourite swaddle or a sentimental keepsake.

III. Dress Baby Comfortably

Keep babys outfit/s simple & comfortable. Neutral or pastel tones photograph beautifully & don’t distract from your baby’s delicate features. For Fresh 48hr sessions, a plain onesie or a soft swaddle can be perfect. Avoid clothing with bold patterns, text, or oversized accessories that may overpower the baby’s natural charm.

IV. Prepare Your Space

If your newborn session is at home, tidy up the area where you’d like the photos taken. Clear clutter from the background & let in as much natural light as possible - soft, natural light enhances the gentle, peaceful vibe of newborn photos. For Fresh 48hr, open hospital blinds to allow light in & let your photographer find the best angles!

V. Embrace the Unscripted Moments

Some of the best photos come from the unscripted moments - your baby yawning, a sibling gazing curiously at their new brother or sister, or parents exchanging a loving glance while holding their newborn. Don’t worry if things don’t go perfectly; capturing these raw, real moments makes for timeless photos.

VI. Feed & Comfort Your Baby Beforehand

A well-fed & comfortable baby is more likely to remain calm during the session. Plan to feed your baby right before the photoshoot begins. Don’t stress if your baby needs breaks to nurse or be soothed during the session—it’s completely normal & expected!

If your comfortable it can make for some gorgeous images!!

VII. Coordinate Outfits for Family Members

If parents & siblings are joining the session, choose outfits that complement each other without matching too closely. Neutral tones or soft colours like cream, grey or pastel shades work beautifully for creating a cohesive look that keeps the focus on your baby. Avoid clothing with logos or distracting patterns.

VIII. Trust Your Photographer

Experienced Newborn/Fresh 48hr photographers know how to create a safe, relaxed environment for your baby. Trust their expertise when it comes to posing, lighting & styling. They’ll guide you through the process & ensure your little one’s comfort & safety remain the top priority.

IX. Be Patient & Flexible

Babies are unpredictable & that’s okay! Sessions can take time, especially if your baby needs to be soothed, changed, or fed. Allow plenty of time for the photoshoot & try to remain relaxed - your calm energy will help your baby feel more at ease.

X. Include Personal Touches

Make your session even more meaningful by incorporating personal items. A handmade blanket, a family heirloom or a special outfit gifted by a loved one can add emotional depth to your photos. These touches make your images even more unique & sentimental.

XI. Capture the Details

Some of the most cherished photos are the little details—tiny fingers, toes, eyelashes, ears, bums! & those adorable newborn wrinkles. Ask your photographer to capture close-ups of these features, as they change so quickly in the first few weeks.

XII. Don’t Forget Parents & Siblings

While it’s tempting to make the entire session about the baby, including parents & siblings in some of the photos creates a beautiful story of connection. Skin-to-skin shots, kisses from siblings, or family cuddles make for heartwarming images that you’ll treasure forever.
